Work

  • Duke of Edinburgh Assessor

Adventure Expeditions - Adventurous Horizons - Bright Expeditions
I have been instructing and assessing the expedition section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for ten years. I teach participants’ expedition skills, including navigation, first aid, safety and camp craft; developing their communication skills, independence and team work. I have assessed qualifying Gold Award participants across the UK and abroad.

See some photos on my ‘Poland and Slovakia’ and ‘France’ pages.

  • Glacier Guide

    Arctic Adventures - Troll Adventures
I spent two winters working as a glacier guide in the south east of Iceland. I would guide clients with a range of abilities on glacier walks on four separate glaciers. Glacier guides work in many weather conditions ensuring clients are instructed in the use of safety equipment, including crampons and axes. We are also proficient in glacier safety, including hazard identification, and crevasse rescue techniques.

See some incredible images from this role on my ‘Iceland’ page.

  • Wilderness Guide

Wilderness Scotland - Pirhuk: Greenland Mountain Guides
I have led groups on a variety of activities, including multi-day trekking and sea kayaking, predominantly in Greenland and Scotland. Managing the expectations of groups with a range of abilities on tours in the Arctic wilderness and across Scotland, including the Isle of Skye, Torridon, Glen Coe and the Scottish Sea Kayak Trail in the North-West Highlands.

See some beautiful photos on my ‘Scotland’ and ‘Greenland’ pages.

  • Long Distance Trail Guide

Thistle Trekking - Wilderness Scotland - High Trails
I have led teams with a variety of skill levels on long distance trails such as the Coast-to-Coast in England, the West Highland Way in Scotland and the Tour du Mont Blanc in France, encouraging team members to achieve further goals in the outdoors.

See some beautiful images from the West Highland Way and beyond on my ‘Scotland’ page.

  • The climbing wall - tall wall

    Climbing Wall Instructor

    Awesome Walls
This was a fantastic job during the damp winter months. I worked with groups of young people, guiding them through NICAS, and introduced adults and families to the centre, teaching them safe indoor climbing practices. I would also manage registrations to the facility, conducting competency checks where necessary.

  • Trekking in the jungle

    Expedition Leader

Nord Anglia Education - Outlook Expeditions
One of the most fulfilling expedition roles - developing key skills within a team of young people to ensure the smooth running of the expedition, including camp craft, safety and security, assessing risk and health and hygiene. Ensuring their safety while abroad, but allowing them the freedom to learn and make mistakes.

See some photos on my ‘Borneo’, ‘Switzerland’ and ‘Tanzania’ pages.

  • Gear Reviewer

    Outdoor Enthusiast Magazine
I was lucky to be a gear reviewer for a couple of years, testing everything from boots to hats and everything in between. It was a fun role, although sometimes challenging when the kit or equipment wasn’t quite what you had hoped. It was an excellent way to discover new brands and items that may not have been on my radar before. While the magazine sadly closed following Covid, the kit I tested is still going strong many years later.

  • Centre Assistant

    Plas y Brenin
I loved my time at Plas y Brenin. Working around the centre with seven like-minded apprentices, spending our spare time climbing, kayaking, running, hiking and canoeing. We would then undertake courses to increase the range of activities we could instruct.
