When you think of European mountains it’s usually the Alps that spring to mind and, more specifically for British climbers, Chamonix. I spent a winter season working there and, while the snow wasn’t great, there were some spectacular days out skiing and snow shoeing. It has always been the point from which to start the Tour du Mont Blanc, which I have completed with groups of both adults and young people. There are also some fantastic hiking trails in Provence, a treat for the senses, permeated by the aroma of lavender and interspersed by hillside villages.
