Poland and Slovakia
The Tatra mountains are incredible. I first traveled to them while assessing Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions, passing from Zakopane in Poland through to Slovakia. Over the years I have weaved in and out of the various trails to a variety of huts and campsites, with my favourite being Teryho Chata, which sits at the top of a valley with incredible views across to Slovakia, chamois carefully trotting around avoiding the snow patches. We managed an early morning ascent of Rysy with one group, ascending from the quiet Slovakian side and enjoying some peaceful moments at the summits but descending into Poland amid hoards of people trying to reach the top. Something to bear in mind if you are thinking of ticking off the highest point in Poland!
